Boxers Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn went face to face within the Piers Morgan Uncensored studio within the lead as much as their April battle. Telling Piers he had been estranged from his father for a “couple of years”, he went on to clarify about how the rift began. He instructed the particular version of Piers Morgan Uncensored: “It got to a stage where I needed to step out of the shadow completely. It’s a big shadow… I realised I have to separate myself from this huge character that’s always next to me. He’s different, his father kind of let him do his own thing and kind of, you know, jump in and sink or swim. My old man was always, always next to me. I got to a stage where I decided that I needed to walk my own path. He was not happy with that decision. That’s the start of it. Then you have a situation with my brother passing away, that affected him in a deep way, affected all of us… Mental health is a real thing. That incident, coupled with the fact that we were already not seeing eye to eye, destroyed a large part of the relationship, and it still hasn’t seemed to have recovered, unfortunately.”
Regardless of dubbing him an “idiot” throughout their fractious studio conflict, Benn, who has an in depth relationship together with his personal father, fighter Nigel Benn, conceded he want to see Eubank Sr on the battle.
He mentioned: “My dad loves me regardless. My dad’s proud of me regardless, the relationship I have with my dad is beyond boxing. It’s funny because my dad doesn’t really, my dad doesn’t really care about what I do in my career. My dad cares more about me as a man and about my happiness… My dad is my hero.”
